Walter “Zaney” Blaney (1928–2020) was a pioneering Texas magician, illusionist, inventor, and teacher whose career spanned more than six decades. A native Texan, Blaney performed thousands of engagements across the United States and internationally, becoming one of the most prominent ambassadors for magic from Texas.
Blaney’s lasting influence came through his innovations in stage magic, most notably the Ladder Levitation, introduced in 1965. His original illusions were performed by some of the world’s leading magicians, while his contributions earned recognition from organizations including the Society of American Magicians, The International Brotherhood of Magicians, the Academy of Magical Arts, and The Magic Circle. He also helped establish the World Alliance of Magicians and served as its first international president.
Through his inventions, teaching, and lifelong dedication to the magical community, Blaney helped shape modern illusion and establish his place in the history of Texas magic, while his impact beyond the stage was recognized when six Texas governors commissioned him as Texas’ Ambassador of Goodwill.
