John Carter

Executive Director

John Carter has been involved in magic for more than 30 years as a performer, collector, and student of the art. What started as a love of performing eventually grew into a fascination with the people, stories, and history behind magic.

John is the Executive Director of the Texas Magic Center, where he is working to preserve that history and make it accessible to both magicians and the general public. His goal is to eventually create a permanent home for the Texas Magic Center where historic collections can be preserved, exhibits can be shared, and people can experience the magic of Texas.

John is an active part of the magic community, having served as President of SAM Assembly 206, partnering often with IBM Ring 60, and sits on the board of Fantastic Magic Camp. He also performs regularly throughout the Austin magic and theater community, combining comedy, magic, and mind-reading to create shows that are as unexpected as they are entertaining.

For John, though, magic isn't just about the tricks. He's particularly interested in the stories behind them. A set of cups, an old poster, a handmade prop, or a magician's personal collection can tell you something about the person who owned it, and the time in which they performed. Those stories are easy to lose, and John believes they are worth saving.
